Typical 8-ft wall = 6 courses of 8×8×16 blocks (8 in. face height + ⅜ in. mortar)
8×8×16 is the standard US CMU block — 1.125 blocks per sq ft of wall face including ⅜ in. mortar joints.
Subtract all openings — standard door = 21 sq ft · standard window = 9–15 sq ft
Structural walls, seismic zones, and retaining walls typically require full grout fill per ACI 530
US typical price: $1.50–$4.00 per standard 8×8×16 CMU block at lumber yards & masonry suppliers
In the United States, concrete blocks — officially called Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) — are hollow or solid precast concrete blocks manufactured to ASTM C90 standards. The standard US CMU block measures 8 inches wide × 8 inches tall × 16 inches long (nominal dimensions), making it the most widely used masonry unit in American construction for foundations, basement walls, retaining walls, commercial buildings, and residential block homes, especially in the South and Southeast US markets.
For the standard 8×8×16 CMU block with ⅜-inch mortar joints, the actual installed face dimensions are 8⅜ inches tall × 16⅜ inches wide, yielding exactly 1.125 blocks per square foot of wall face. To calculate blocks: multiply wall square footage by 1.125, subtract openings, then add 5–10% for waste and cuts. One 70 lb bag of mortar mix covers approximately 28–33 blocks when laid in running bond with ⅜-inch joints.
All load-bearing CMU blocks in the United States must meet ASTM C90 — Standard Specification for Loadbearing Concrete Masonry Units. C90 requires a minimum net compressive strength of 1,900 PSI (average of 3 units) and controls moisture absorption, dimensions, and physical properties. Non-load-bearing partition blocks follow ASTM C129.
The vast majority of US CMU walls are built in running bond — each block centered over the vertical joint below, providing excellent structural continuity. Stack bond (all joints aligned vertically) requires additional horizontal reinforcement and is typically only used for aesthetic purposes in non-structural partition walls where permitted by the local building code.
The ACI 530 Masonry Building Code and the IBC require full grout fill of CMU cells in seismic design categories C, D, E, and F, in retaining walls over 4 feet, and in all reinforced masonry structural systems. Grout must have a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 2,000 PSI (fine grout) or 2,500 PSI (coarse grout) per ASTM C476.
Estimating concrete blocks for a US masonry project requires calculating wall square footage, applying the block coverage factor for your chosen block size, subtracting openings, and adding waste. The mortar and grout volumes are then derived from the block count. All US masonry estimating follows the NCMA TEK Note series and standard practices from the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA).
CMU blocks must be cut at corners, around openings, and at wall ends — a standard masonry saw produces significant waste. On simple rectangular walls with few openings, 5% waste is typical. On complex layouts with many corners, curved walls, or numerous window and door openings, use 10% waste. Never order the exact calculated quantity — running out of blocks mid-course creates mortar cold joints, delays, and color matching problems when re-ordering.
The table below covers all standard US CMU block sizes per ASTM C90, their nominal and actual dimensions, coverage factors, approximate weight, and typical applications. All sizes are available at US masonry supply yards, home improvement stores (Home Depot, Lowe's), and building material dealers nationwide.
| Block Size (Nominal) | Actual Dimensions | Blocks per Sq Ft | Weight (lb) | Typical Application | ASTM Standard |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8×16 | 3⅝ × 7⅝ × 15⅝ in. | 1.125 | ~26 lb | Partition walls, non-load-bearing | ASTM C90 / C129 |
| 6×8×16 | 5⅝ × 7⅝ × 15⅝ in. | 1.125 | ~32 lb | Light load-bearing interior walls | ASTM C90 |
| 8×8×16 | 7⅝ × 7⅝ × 15⅝ in. | 1.125 | ~38–43 lb | Standard walls, foundations, most uses | ASTM C90 — Most Common |
| 10×8×16 | 9⅝ × 7⅝ × 15⅝ in. | 1.125 | ~47 lb | Heavier structural & sound attenuation | ASTM C90 |
| 12×8×16 | 11⅝ × 7⅝ × 15⅝ in. | 1.125 | ~55 lb | Basement foundations, heavy retaining | ASTM C90 |
| 8×4×16 (Half Height) | 7⅝ × 3⅝ × 15⅝ in. | 2.25 | ~22 lb | Top course, sill course, infill | ASTM C90 |
| 8×8×8 (Half Length) | 7⅝ × 7⅝ × 7⅝ in. | 2.25 | ~19 lb | Corner closures, jamb blocks | ASTM C90 |
US CMU blocks are sold by nominal dimensions which include the ⅜-inch mortar joint. A "8×8×16 block" actually measures 7⅝ × 7⅝ × 15⅝ inches. The mortar joint fills the remaining ⅜ inch. This is why the coverage factor is 1.125 blocks per square foot — the nominal 8-inch height + ⅜-inch joint = 8.375 inches, and 12 ÷ 8.375 × 12 ÷ 16.375 = 1.125 exactly.
US CMU walls use Type S or Type N mortar (ASTM C270). Type S (2,500 PSI) is required for below-grade and exterior walls. Type N (750 PSI) is for above-grade interior applications. Pre-bagged mortar mixes (70 lb bags) cover approximately 28–33 standard 8×8×16 blocks. For large projects, specify mortar by the ton from masonry supply yards.
Most US structural CMU walls require bond beam courses — special U-shaped blocks filled with rebar and grout — at the top of the wall and above all openings. Bond beams act as horizontal beams distributing loads and providing seismic resistance. They require lintel blocks (U-shaped) instead of standard hollow blocks — estimate 1 lintel block per 1.33 linear feet of bond beam course.
Standard 8×8×16 CMU blocks cost $1.50–$4.00 each at US masonry suppliers and big-box stores, depending on region and quantity. Split-face architectural CMU runs $3–$8 per block. Lightweight CMU (pumice or expanded shale aggregate) costs 15–30% more than standard weight. Buying by the pallet (usually 90–100 blocks) typically saves 10–15% versus individual pricing.
US masonry suppliers sell standard 8×8×16 CMU blocks by the pallet — typically 90 blocks per pallet for standard weight, 100 for lightweight. Always round your order up to the nearest full pallet to avoid re-delivery charges and color/batch variation. Most suppliers charge a $50–$100 delivery fee per pallet, so consolidating your order to minimize pallets saves significantly on larger jobs. Ask your supplier about pallet returns for unused full blocks — many US masonry yards accept unopened pallet returns within 30 days.
The table below provides pre-calculated material quantities for standard 8×8×16 CMU walls at various sizes, including blocks, mortar bags, grout volume, and rebar — based on NCMA estimating guidelines and standard US masonry practices. All quantities include 5% waste for blocks and 10% overage for mortar and grout.
| Wall Size | Wall Area (sq ft) | Blocks (8×8×16 + 5%) | Mortar Bags (70 lb) | Grout (Full Fill) | Wall Type |

| 100 ft × 12 ft | 1,200 sq ft | 1,418 blocks | 51 bags | 4.95 cu yd | Warehouse / Building |
| 20 ft × 4 ft (Retaining) | 80 sq ft | 95 blocks | 4 bags | 0.33 cu yd | Retaining Wall |
Standard hollow CMU blocks are not waterproof — they are porous and will absorb groundwater, leading to efflorescence, spalling, rebar corrosion, and structural failure over time. All US below-grade CMU foundation walls must be waterproofed with a parge coat + elastomeric coating, liquid-applied membrane, or drainage board system per the IRC Section R406 and IBC Section 1805. Full grout fill of all cells also significantly reduces water infiltration in below-grade CMU walls.
